On April 1, 1940 Lillian SCHLETTER, my Grand Aunt, was a 51 year old single white female institutionalized at Creedmoor State Hospital in Queens Village in New York City. She also lived there during the 1930 Census. It was reported to the census taker that Lillian, as all patients on her census page, worked 3 hours a week. Her highest level of education— for the first time in 1940 recorded as part of the census—is entered with a question mark.

Nearly three years later on March 12, 1943, as shown on the Greater Astoria Historical website is this report about Creedmoor:

Governor Thomas Dewey ordered an investigation of what he called “disgraceful conditions” at Creedmoor State Hospital in Queens Village. Those conditions had led to an outbreak of amoebic dysentery, which had killed nine patients. In late February, one patient had beaten another patient to death. At the same time, Queens District Attorney, Charles F. Sullivan, brought these matters before a grand jury. It would be the third time in 8 years that a grand jury had looked into the affairs of Creedmoor. A 1935 investigation revealed that there were 15 violent deaths in 12 months. A 1939 report stated that patients were brutally beaten. Initial findings of the probe disclosed that attendants at Creedmoor were making only $54 a month and that, out of the normal attendant staff of 500, there were 157 vacancies.

Lillian died in July 1967. Her exact place of death is unknown however it was recorded at Suffolk County New York home to King’s Park Psychiatric Center where Lillian was incarcerated during the 1920 Census timeframe.

Woody Guthrie died October 3, 1967 while at Creedmoor. He suffered from Huntington’s Disease, a degenerative nerve disorder.

Some hours later he was found dead. He had bequeathed all of his valuables to an old friend, a Mrs. Cella Doell, of 1447 De Kalb Avenue, and set aside $25 with which his friends were to make merry and feast after he was cremated.

Before Strangling Himself Once Wealthy Man Provides Money for Music and Cheer for Friends.

Carefully arranging his very small store of worldly goods on a table in his room and setting aside his last $25 with written instructions that the money be spent by his few remaining friends in music and refreshments after his funeral, Carl Schletter, a cigarmaker, strangled himself yesterday in his furnished room, at No. 14 Fayette Street, Williamsburg.

Schletter was fifty-five years old. Ten years ago he was in prosperous circumstances. Then came reverses and with them domestic troubles, which he had tried in vain for years to straighten out. His wife and son left him and would not return.

Recently Schletter told his friends that he did not know how much longer he could stand the strain of his lonely life.

“But,” he said, “because I am miserable and have had misfortunes I do not want my friends to grieve for me. I want them to remember that when I go I am going to rest and peace, neither of which I have had since I lost my wife and boy. I want my friends to rejoice with me when I leave my troubles behind me.”

Schletter’s friends did not fully understand until yesterday just what he meant [missing text]

[missing text] … pear his landlady forced the door and found her lodger dead on the floor, the cord of a window shade tied tightly about his neck.

On a table were Schletter’s last $25, and with it a few lines stating that is was to be spent for music and refreshments after his funeral. He requested his friends to remember him as a jolly fellow, not as a despondent broken man. He also asked to have his body cremated.

Schletter’s friends have arranged to carry out his programme literally by spending his last few dollars on an evening of gayety.

New York. Tuesday. July 18, 1911

LEAVES MONEY FOR “WAKE”

Schletter Committed Suicide, but wanted Friends to Have a Good Time.

Camillo Schletter, 55 years old, lodging at 14 Fayette street, committed suicide this morning as a result of melancholia brought on by a dream of former happiness with his wife from whom he had been long separated. He left an interesting will in which he provided for merrymaking and music after his funeral for his friends.

Schletter had come over from Germany thirty years ago and had been a prosperous cigar manufacturer until the panic of 1905 ruined him. Since then he had to work for others. He had separated from his wife for years but apparently was always fond of her. Sunday night he dreamed of their courtship in the old country, which made him melancholy all the net day.

This morning Benjamin Schulz, with whom Schletter lived, finding that he had not arisen at 10:30, broke in his door in company with Officer James Chrystal of the Hamburg avenue station. They found Schletter in bed, strangled with a cord, the body still warm. By the time Dr. Doyle of St. Catherine’s Hospital could reach the house, the man was dead.

On the table was a package with a note directing that it be given to Mrs. Cecile Doell of 1447 DeKalb avenue. Mrs. Doell is the secretary of Branch 6 of the “Benevolent Order of the United States for the Propagation of Cremation” of which society Schletter was a member. In the package were membership cards and due books of the association and a letter saying” “Cannot stand the pain any longer.”

The man had $50 in the books of the society. He had left a will in the so called “will book” of the society in which he directed that the money be spent as follows: “50 to the undertaker for cremation and the use of one carriage! $5 to Mrs. Doell for seeing to the arrangements and $25 for refreshments, music and lunch and a general good time for his friends after the funeral.” These instructions will be carried out and the luncheon will be at the Labor Lyceum, Willoughby and Myrtle avenues after the funeral services.

29 Clover Ave, Floral Park, NY 11001

Peter EVERS (55) reported to the Census Enumerator that on April 1, 1940 he owned his house located in the incorporated place of Floral Park within the Town of Hempstead. It was valued at $6,500. Interestingly, Peter is recorded as 58 years old in the 1930 Census. That census did not record the person providing the family information. At that time Peter and Dorothy lived in Jamaica Queens. In the 1940 household along with his wife Dorothy (Schletter, 33) was her Maternal Grandmother Doris (Ritter) SCHWARZ (74). Peter’s highest grade of school completed was 4 years of High School as was Dorothy’s. Doris made it through the eighth grade.

Peter and Dorothy were born in the state of New York. Doris was born in Norway. It is recorded that on April 1, 1935 Peter lived in Albany, NY and Dorothy lived in Brooklyn. On that day in 1935, Doris is reported to have lived on a farm in “Christana”, Norway. Christiania, Norway is Oslo.

Peter worked 44 hours the week of March 24 – 30, 1940 as a “Printed Cards” salesman. He worked 34 weeks in 1939 and earned $1,800.

One in twenty persons listed in each 1940 Census were required to supply supplemental information. Luckily, Doris was one in twenty. From this additional information we learn that her Father was born in Norway and her Mother in Germany. She spoke Norwegian in her earliest childhood. Doris was widowed, married only once, got married at 19 and had 2 children. Her usual occupation was “Home” and she did not have a Social Security number.

Zillow.com today reports that this 1918 built, 2bed/1.5bath 1,178 SF house on its .11 acre lot last sold in September 1995 for $180,000 and is estimated by Zillow to be worth $441,000.

Take a look at the census lines 27 – 29 in the image attached. There is also supplemental information about Doris on the very last line of the page.

One of our more mysterious families, Sarah BROADHURST (#3 of 11) and James WOODWARD, has a bit more information thanks to Bill Hoke. Bill recalled two things about their daughter Frances Woodward: Frances was a Ziegfeld Girl and she married George Bau. From those two clues I was able to piece this story together.

Frances was born in 1908 in Dover, New Hampshire where her parents worked in a cotton mill and sometime after 1920, she moved to New York City. By opening night, 28 March 1927, Frances was a dancing girl at the Majestic Theater (where the Phantom lives now) in a musical revue, “Rufus LeMaire’s Affairs.” In August of 1927 Frances was in the opening night cast of ”Ziegfeld Follies of 1927″ at the New Amsterdam Theatre on 42nd Street, where Disney’s Lion King reigned. The picture above on the left is of the Ziegfeld Girls around the time Frances was a member. Additional information is listed in Frances’ Internet Broadway Database listing: click here to view.

Frances must have been garnering attention as an actress because by 1932 when she fell off a horse and broke her arm in Baltimore the news made it into The New York Times:

Ed Wynn

In 1934 Frances Woodward marries and again she makes the New York Times:

Her husband Adrian Droeshout worked for the French Line Steamship Company.

So how does Charles Laughton and his hump work into this tale?

From other family obituaries we know that Frances’ parents moved at some point to Los Angeles and I think Frances and her husband moved there before 1943. The Internet Movie Database list Frances Woodward playing the role of Sue Mason in the Hopalong Cassidy adventure “Riders of the Deadline.” It is her only credit on IMDB.com.

Frances gets credit above Robert Mitchum!

The Internet Movie Database lists Adrian Droeshout playing uncredited bit parts in movies from 1944 – 1946. It’s the the war years. By 1949 Adrian returns to work for the French Line in their new Los Angeles office according to a New York Times article. In that article it states that Adrian had been working with the publicity department of Warner Brothers.

The Hump?

Also at Warner Brothers were Gordon Bau, the head of makeup department and his brother George Bau, renowned Hollywood makeup artist, who at one time headed its prosthetics laboratory. George developed a new foam rubber formula for a lightweight facial makeup and hump which Charles Laughton wore as Quasimodo in 1939′s Hunchback of Notre Dame.

So, where are we?

I haven’t found any record of a divorce for Frances and Adrian, but our cousin Bill Hoke is certain that Frances and George Bau visited the Adams Cabins as husband and wife. Were they? Does anyone else know any more information about these family members? Let me know if you do and thanks for reading all the way to the bottom on this one!

Once upon a time, at least once, our Richard and Sarah Ann Broadhurst family went on vacation to the Isle of Man. The Isle of Man is a self-governing British Crown Dependency located in the Irish Sea between the islands of Great Britain and Ireland. Tourism boomed here in the late 1870′s and 1880′s as it became a favorite vacation spot for the mill workers of England; like our family.

The photo above–click photo for larger image–was provide by Bill Hoke at our recent Broadhurst Families reunion, it’s of our family taken on the Isle of Man. The photographer was Hugh H. McKay of Viking Studio on Douglas Head Road and based on the fake car it may have been taken around 1905.

By this time all eleven of Richard and Sarah’s children had been born: 1) Fannie, 1877 ; 2) Annie, 1879; 3) Sarah, 1882; 4) Jack, 1884; 5) Gertrude, 1887; 6) May, 1888; 7) Peter, 1889; 8) Nellie, 1891; 9) Violet, 1894; 10) Percy, 1896; and 11) Willie, 1898. In the 1901 England census two of their children were not in the household; Fannie and Sarah.

So who’s who? Does any one out there know for sure?

Up until recently the earliest family group I’ve posted has been John and Frances Adshead BROADHURST. John and Frances are my 2nd great grandparents. Their marriage certificate list’s John’s father as William Broadhurst and Edward Broadhurst as a witness. An 1841 England Census lists what I believe to be his family; William and Mary Broadhurst with children Elizabeth, Ann, Edward and Richard. I’ve recently found an older RootsWeb posting that perhaps better documents this family grouping. As of this date I still to confirm the sources with the original RootsWeb lister. Based on this infomation the family group would be as follows:

Farmer William BROADHURST (b abt 1781 Chelford) married Mary HARDERN on Tuesday, 10 February 1807 in St. Mary’s Sandbach. William and Mary may have had eight children:

Thomas (b 17 Apr 1814 in Chelford, bap 17 Apr 1814)

Edward H. (b 21 Apr 1816 in Chelford, bap 21 Apr 1816, married Ann WOOLLEY abt 1845, d 17 Feb 1885 buried in Wilmslow Parish Church Cemetery)

Richard (b 9 Mar 1818 in Chelford, bap 5 Apr 1818, married Mary UNKOWN, d 17 Mar 1884 in Broadwall, Sandbach and buried 21 Mar 1884 in St. Bartholemews, Wilmslow)

Thirty relative strangers shared a wonderful weekend together this June. Cousins mostly as we’re all related by virtue of sharing a connection to one of the eleven children of Richard and Sarah Ann Jones Broadhurst. Thanks go to the families of Harold Broadhurst and his sister Shirley Smaka for hosting a cocktail party and then arranging a dinner for us at Foxy’s near Alexandria Bay. The next day Gary and Kathy Snow hosted us at their riverfront home in Alexandria Bay, a place many knew as The Adams Greentop Cabins from childhood. Gary’s grandparents owned the property originally and it held wonderful memories for many of the cousins.

Generally from left to right moving up and down as needed, we have: Susan Broadhurst, Scott Broadhurst, Ruth Broadhurst, Greg Broadhurst (red shirt), Chris Whitman behind Greg, Harold Broadhurst behind Chris, Kay Schwartz in front of Greg, Candy Baker Broadhurst behind Kay, Dick Broadhurst (me) behind my wife Candy, Jenna Marie Frisolone, her grandparents Al and Sandy (sunglasses) behind her, Shirley Smaka (in front with notebook), Richard Smaka, Mary Snow, Carol Murdock, Gary Snow (with cap), Beverly Frisolone behind Gary, Karen Fehr, Bill Hoke, Jess Fehr, Sue Hoke, Bob Murdock behind Sue and Kathy Snow. Got that? Not pictured are Steve Whitman and Barry Schwartz who were both busy taking pictures for the rest of us. Also, the night before at Foxy’s we were joined by Karen Broadhurst as well as Terry and Kirstin Underwood. In the photo below we’re standing in front one of the original cabins.
